iSCSI stands for Internet Small Computer Systems Interface. It was was created to be an end-to-end protocol for transporting storage I/O block data over an IP network. It is used on storage devices (targets), servers (initiators), and protocol transfer gateway devices. The protocol uses standard Ethernet switches and router to move data between server and storage, and it enables this infrastructure to access SAN over any distance. iSCSI is based upon established SCSI and IP protocols.
