Gigabit Ethernet is the 1000Mb/s version of the evolving Ethernet network standard. It is typically implemented over category 5 copper cabling, however optical media is also a popular implementation. Gigabit Ethernet is relatively simple with which to work and is widely implemented by many vendors into many types of equipment, including directly to the desktop. The standards are created and maintained by the 802.3 working group of the IEEE LAN-MAN Standards Committee.
